Liverpool are crowned champions of England for the 19th time and the first time since 1990 courtesy of closest challengers Manchester City's defeat at Chelsea.

Liverpool have been crowned champions of England for the first time since 1990 after closest challengers Manchester City fell to a 2-1 defeat at the hands of Chelsea this evening.

Jurgen Klopp's side beat Crystal Palace 4-0 in their first home game back after lockdown on Wednesday night - a result which left Man City knowing that only a win would do if they were to extend their title reign until the top two meet at the Etihad Stadium on July 2.

However, Chelsea's win at Stamford Bridge leaves Pep Guardiola's side 23 points adrift of the runaway leaders with only 21 more points to fight for this season.

The success sees Liverpool end a 30-year wait for their 19th title, moving to within one of Manchester United in the all-time list of English top-flight crowns.

It is the first time the Reds have been crowned champions in the Premier League era, and they have done so in style with a campaign of unprecedented dominance.

Klopp's men have dropped points in only three games all season and have wrapped up the title with seven games of their campaign remaining - two games earlier than any other club in history.

Liverpool are also on course to claim the most points and most wins in a single English top-flight season.

The Reds' first game as champions will come against the team they have just dethroned, with Man City hosting a top-two showdown on Thursday, July 2.
