How Chelsea could line up against Barnsley

Sports Mole looks at how Chelsea could line up for their EFL Cup third-round clash with Barnsley on Wednesday evening.

Chelsea's first cup game of the 2020-21 campaign sees the Blues welcome Championship side Barnsley to Stamford Bridge for the third round of the EFL Cup.

Frank Lampard's side go into the midweek clash following a dismal 2-0 defeat to Liverpool on home soil, and Chelsea will be out for blood when they face off against the Tykes on Wednesday evening.

The winners of this tie can look forward to meeting either Leyton Orient or Tottenham Hotspur in the fourth round, and with the league campaign also in Lampard's mind, the Chelsea boss has plenty of decisions to make when it comes to team selection for the encounter with Barnsley.

Here, Sports Mole looks at how Chelsea could line up for the visit of Barnsley at Stamford Bridge.

Lampard is expected to ring the changes for the midweek clash with Barnsley, but the Chelsea boss still has a number of absentees to contend with at this early stage of the season.

Billy Gilmour and Hakim Ziyech are out through injury and Andreas Christensen is suspended, while Christian Pulisic is not expected to be fit in time.

However, Lampard has confirmed that defensive duo Ben Chilwell and Thiago Silva are in the squad for the midweek showdown, so both players could have a chance of featuring, albeit probably not from the first whistle.

Lampard has already confirmed one change from the Liverpool game - Willy Caballero will replace Kepa Arrizabalaga in goal - with the Spaniard at fault for Sadio Mane's second in the defeat to Liverpool.

The Chelsea manager could look to freshen up his backline with the inclusion of Fikayo Tomori from the first whistle, and the Englishman will likely be partnered by Antonio Rudiger, who was left out of the squad to face Liverpool.

Emerson Palmieri will be holding out for a start at left-back with captain Cesar Azpilicueta occupying the opposite flank, while English duo Ross Barkley and Ruben Loftus-Cheek will look to start in midfield.

Up top, Kai Havertz has not quite hit the ground running in England and was hauled off at half time in the weekend defeat, but Wednesday's clash represents the perfect opportunity for the German attacker to kickstart his Chelsea career and he could be handed another start by Lampard.

Tammy Abraham came off the bench against the Reds and is in contention to replace Timo Werner at the forefront of the Chelsea attack, while Callum Hudson-Odoi was an unused substitute last time out and will be vying for a start here.
