Silva believes the recent 6-0 thrashing of Chelsea in the Premier League has no bearing on Sunday's Carabao Cup showdown with the Blues.

Bernardo Silva wants Manchester City to develop the habit of defending trophies year after year.

City are bidding to retain the Carabao Cup as they face Chelsea at Wembley on Sunday, a feat they have never previously achieved in any competition.

City are also hoping to win successive Premier League crowns and, with the Champions League and FA Cup in their sights, too, there could be more opportunities to go back to back next season.

"That is one of our main goals – not only winning it once but to keep winning and winning," said Silva, looking ahead to this weekend's showpiece event.

"We know we have the squad to do that but our opponents are very strong and it won't be an easy job. We will do our best to try."

Silva is wary of the threat posed by Chelsea despite being part of the side that thrashed the Londoners 6-0 when they met at the Etihad Stadium less than a fortnight ago.

The Portugal midfielder says that result will count for little at Wembley.

The 24-year-old said: "To be honest we should forget that match because it won't happen again. We are not expecting the same result.

"We are playing against one of the best sides in the world, even though lately their results are not the best for them.

"Against those kinds of players you can never relax, and if you give them time to think, time to play and time to decide they will destroy you. So, we have to play with the same intensity and try to win another trophy."

City were given a reminder on Wednesday of how difficult opponents at the elite level can be.

Pep Guardiola's men needed late goals from Leroy Sane and Raheem Sterling to snatch a dramatic 3-2 win over Schalke in the first leg of their Champions League last-16 tie in Germany.

Silva said: "I think we know how good the teams are in the Champions League.

"When you play Champions League you know you are playing against the best teams, the best players and the best crowds, so we were not expecting an easy game and that's what happened.

"We were very happy with the result and now we want to finish the job and go through to the quarter-finals."
