Chelsea striker Alvaro Morata is delighted to have scored on his return to the Spanish capital after helping his side to a 2-1 win over Atletico Madrid.

Alvaro Morata has admitted that scoring a key goal for Chelsea against Atletico Madrid in the Champions League was a "special" feeling.

The 24-year-old became the first visiting player to net a European goal at the Rojiblancos' new state-of-the-art Wanda Metropolitano stadium, helping his side to a 2-1 win.

Morata has previously spent two spells with city rivals Real Madrid, playing his part in last season's famous double-winning campaign, and he was delighted to mark his return to the Spanish capital with a well-taken header.

"We secured a very important victory in what was a great test," he told reporters. "We faced Atletico, a team that has reached the Champions League final in the past few years. We've achieved the three points and we can now go home, rest and focus on the Premier League.

"It is always nice and special to score at a new stadium. I am happy with the victory; it has nothing to do with my past. I am also very happy to have started the season so well. But I insist that the main thing today was to win the game and secure all three points."

Chelsea, 6-0 winners against Qarabag in their opening Champions League fixture, sit at the top of the Group C standings.
