The teenager's run in the team has coincided with Burnley's upturn in results.

Burnley winger Dwight McNeil has committed his long-term future to the club by signing a new contract.

The 19-year-old has agreed an improved deal to keep him at Turf Moor until June 2023, with the option of an additional 12 months.

McNeil only signed his first professional contract with the club last April but has enjoyed an impressive breakthrough season at first-team level, after making his debut for Burnley on the final day of the 2017/18 campaign.

"A lot has happened in a short space of time and I'm happy to have signed a new deal," said McNeil, who has started the last four Premier League games as Burnley have amassed 10 points to help them edge clear of the bottom three.

"I hadn't really thought this far ahead but I'm just happy it's come so soon. The main aim was to sign it so I can focus on my football and I've done that now so I can focus and crack on with what I'm doing.

"I think I've taken my opportunity well and hopefully I can build on that. Hopefully I can stay in the team and really focus on this season. I think we're doing well and we've got to keep that form going.

"It's a dream staying in the Premier League. It's the best league in the world and you always want to stay and play in the Premier League."

McNeil joined Burnley's youth set-up in 2014 after leaving Manchester United and he has gone on to start eight first-team matches, with a further three appearances as a substitute.

He is the first homegrown player to make a major first-team impact for the Clarets since former striker Jay Rodriguez.
