Sam Vokes signs new contract at Burnley

Wales international Vokes has committed himself to the Clarets until the summer of 2021.

Sam Vokes has signed a new three-year deal with Burnley.

Wales forward Vokes has committed himself to the Clarets until the summer of 2021.

The 29-year-old moved from Wolves on a permanent deal during July 2012 following a successful loan spell the previous season.

Vokes scored Burnley’s first goal in Europe for 51 years during a Europa League tie at Aberdeen in July.

He has hit two goals in his last three Premier League appearances, as well as being on target for Wales in their recent defeat by Spain in Cardiff.

Vokes will be hoping to retain his place in the side for Sunday’s Premier League match against Chelsea at Turf Moor.

“With a fully fit squad, the competition has never been higher,” Vokes said on the Burnley website.

“It’s a club on the rise and that brings its challenges for the players with competition for places.

“But that’s what you want as a squad, to have that competition and people fighting for spots.”

Winger Robbie Brady comes into contention for the first time this season after a hamstring problem delayed his comeback from a serious knee injury.

Aaron Lennon, though, has been laid low by a sickness bug, so will be monitored ahead of the clash with the Blues.

Whatever team he puts out on Sunday, Clarets boss Sean Dyche knows they cannot afford to take their eye off Chelsea’s man-of-the-moment Eden Hazard.

The Belgian has scored eight goals so far in an impressive start under new Blues boss Maurizio Sarri.

Dyche said: “He continues to improve I think and he’s continued to show that again this season.

“I think he’s shown his flexibility as a player, under different managers as well. I think most managers would like to have the chance to fit him in their side.”

The Burnley manager added at a press conference: “He is a top player, but you can pick out top players in all the teams in the Premier League, particularly the top sides.

“The real big sides don’t just have one, trust me.

“Chelsea are a fine outfit – you saw that on Thursday night (in the 3-1 Europa League win over BATE Borisov) – they made eight changes and you saw what happened, still a very, very strong outfit.

“We certainly don’t rely on what might happen with one player, but you’ve got to be aware of how good some of those players are and he (Hazard) is certainly right up there.”
