Preview: Brest vs. Monaco - prediction, team news, lineups

Sports Mole previews Sunday's Ligue 1 clash between Brest and Monaco, including team news and predicted lineups.

Brest will be aiming to recover from their agonising defeat to Angers when they play host to Monaco at the Stade Francis-Le Ble on Sunday afternoon.

In contrast, Monaco are looking to win successive matches in Ligue 1 following their 3-2 victory over Strasbourg last weekend.

Match preview

Brest's fortunes seemed to be improving following two early losses to Nimes and Marseille, as Olivier Dall'Oglio soon witnessed his side pick up six points from their encounters with Dijon and Lorient.

However, Les Pirates were sent crashing back down to earth during their trip to Angers, although it took two late goals from Ismael Traore and Angelo Fulgini for the hosts to edge a five-goal thriller with Brest last Sunday.

Brest's first five games in the 2020-21 campaign have been packed with goals; Dall'Oglio's men have scored nine thus far - the highest outside the top five - but Les Pirates have also let in a 12 at the other end of the pitch.

Monaco's formidable attacking stars will certainly be taking no prisoners against a Brest side who have conceded the most goals in the division, but the visitors did not dominate a struggling Strasbourg side by any means in gameweek five.

Monaco suffered their first defeat of the season in a top-of-the-table clash with Rennes in gameweek four, so a clash with an out-of-sorts Strasbourg side was just what Niko Kovac's men needed to boost their confidence and get back to winning ways.

While Les Monegasques did end up taking the spoils in that fixture, Monaco did not make it easy for themselves at all as Axel Disasi and Aurelien Tchouameni were both given their marching orders in the second half.

But with Wissam Ben Yedder up top, Monaco fans can rest easy knowing that the Frenchman is there to bail them out when needed - the 30-year-old's brace paved the way for a slender victory for Les Monegasques against Thierry Laurey's men last weekend.

Monaco will certainly not be underestimating Brest given the manner of their victory against Strasbourg, but should other results go their way, Kovac's side have a slim chance of going top by the close of play this weekend.

However, that scenario is highly unlikely, with Rennes and Lille both looking forward to clashes with struggling sides in Reims and Strasbourg respectively.

Brest and Monaco met last season for the first time since the 2010-11 campaign, and Les Monegasques cruised to a 4-1 victory in that encounter.

Team News

Brest's Denys Bain is expected to remain sidelined until 2021 as he recovers from a cruciate ligament rupture, while the hosts will also have to do without centre-back Christophe Herelle due to concussion.

Steve Mounie and Gaetan Charbonnier will both look to keep their places up top after netting against Angers, while Franck Honorat and Romain Philippoteaux are in contention to come back in on the flanks.

Meanwhile, Kovac will be travelling to Brest without the suspended Disasi and Tchouameni, while Guillermo Maripan is being linked with a move to the Premier League.

Jemerson could therefore be recalled to the side in place of Disasi, while Sofiane Diop is an option in the midfield three alongside Cesc Fabregas and Youssouf Fofana.

Aleksandr Golovin is still struggling with a hamstring injury but could return to action later this month.

Brest possible starting lineup:
Larsonneur; Pierre-Gabriel, Duverne, Chardonnet, Perraud; Diallo, Belkebla; Honorat, Charbonnier, Philippoteaux; Mounie

Monaco possible starting lineup:
Lecomte; Aguilar, Badiashile, Jemerson, Ballo-Toure; Fofana, Fabregas, Diop; Volland, Ben Yedder, Onyekuru

We say: Brest 1-2 Monaco

Monaco will be without a couple of key players for their trip to Brest, but the visitors have the attacking firepower to overcome most teams on their day. Brest should feel capable of coming away from this game with something to show for their efforts, but we are backing Monaco to get over the line and record a second victory in succession.
