AC Milan have emerged victorious from Wednesday night's International Champions Cup clash against Bayern Munich at Chicago's Soldier Field, holding the Bundesliga giants to a 3-3 draw before triumphing 5-3 on penalties.

The Rossoneri broke the deadlock in the 23rd minute as defender Holger Badstuber's poor touch at the back sent M'Baye Niang clean through on goal against Sven Ulreich, who could not keep out the striker's low shot into the net.

Bayern, however, drew level just six minutes later through Franck Ribery, who connected with David Alaba's cross and sent a ferocious left-footed shot past Gianluigi Donnarumma.

The provider then turned scorer to fire Bayern into the lead shortly before the break as the Milan backline allowed the Austrian to turn outside the box and launch a whistling shot that beat the teenage Rossoneri keeper to his left side.

An exciting game took another twist as Andrea Bertolacci fired in the equaliser for the Italian side four minutes after the break, before Juraj Kucka put Milan ahead just before the hour mark.

Just when it seemed like Vincenzo Montella's charges would hang on to a morale-boosting pre-season win, Jherson Vergara brought down Juan Bernat in the penalty area, and Ribery slotted home the spot kick to send the match into a shoot-out.

Nonetheless the San Siro side held their nerve when it came to penalties as their opponents blinked first, Rafinha missing his spot kick and allowing Giacomo Bonaventura to step up and seal victory for the Serie A giants.
