Bayern Munich's hopes of claiming the treble under Jupp Heynckes remain alive after securing a place in the third round of the DFB-Pokal on Wednesday night.
The Bavarians were taken to penalties by RB Leipzig at the Red Bull Arena, despite playing against 10 men following Naby Keita's sending-off early in the second half.
Emil Forsberg netted from the penalty spot in normal time, five minutes before Thiago Alcantara equalised, but it was a miss from Timo Werner in the shootout that gave Bayern victory.

7.15pmThe early rounds of cup competitions tend to be relatively smooth sailing for the so-called bigger teams, but on this occasion, Bayern or Leipzig will face an early exit from the DFB-Pokal this evening.

7.25pmAgainst Freiburg, the forward created an assist in the 5-0 rout and he followed up that performance with a goal in a 3-0 triumph over Champions League opponents Celtic. Muller managed just 10 minutes on the field before he was taken off with injury at Hamburg, but in that time he made the one and only goal of the match - scored by Corentin Tolisso.
7.27pmJames Rodriguez may have been the obvious choice to replace injured Muller for this evening's match, but he too will be on the sidelines due to a back problem. The Real Madrid loanee has struggled for game time at the Allianz Arena, starting just two Bundesliga matches - the second of which was at the weekend against Hamburg - and two Champions League fixtures.

7.37pmWhile some fans have a sour taste in the mouth when it comes to Leipzig, it cannot be denied that Ralph Hasenhuttl's side have played some exciting football. Last season, the team had the third-best attacking statistics of the Bundesliga with 66 goals to their name.
7.38pmAt the tender age of 21, Timo Werner finished the campaign fourth in the list of the league's top scorers with a tally of 21 goals. Putting that into context, though, Dortmund's Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang racked up the most (31), while Bayern's Robert Lewandowski just missed out on the top spot with 30.
7.39pmAt the back, Leipzig were also relatively solid, keeping 10 clean sheets and conceding 39, which gave them the third-best defence of the division. This season, the club have lost just three of their 13 matches in all competitions and they find themselves third in the league, just one point behind Dortmund and Bayern.
7.39pmHasenhuttl's team have managed to find the back of the net 25 times in all competitions, but they have struggled for clean sheets, keeping goals out on just three occasions so far, which bodes well for Bayern given that the team have scored three or more in two of their last three games.
7.40pmHEAD TO HEAD: The last two matches between the clubs have been high scoring, with 12 goals hitting the net in total. The first meeting was held at the Allianz Arena and it was a fairly straightforward task for Bayern, with Lewandowski, Xabi Alonso and Alcantara getting on the scoresheet. It was a miserable day all round for Leipzig as they lost Emil Forsberg to a red card 30 minutes into the game.

Marcel Sabitzer put the team ahead inside the first two minutes of the match, but Lewandowski levelled things up before the 20-minute mark. A goal from Werner sent the hosts into the half-time break with the lead, but the game was far from over.

7 minForsberg is involved again for Leipzig as the forward players force the ball up the pitch. The forward tired to get on his favoured foot to unleash a shot on the edge of the area, but Bayern shirts swam around him.
8 minCHANCE! Robben sends a lovely ball through the defenders to find Lewandowski onside, The Poland international drives to the byline before sending a low cross across goal, but Bernardo manages to kick it out for a corner, which comes to nothing.
10 minForsberg leaves Vidal chasing his heels as he aims for the box, but the play breaks down and the ball is forced back to Leipzig's keeper. The hosts are showing danger and pace when on the frontfoot, but they ae yet to get a shot on target.
11 minKeita and Vidal tussle on the ball in the middle of the park and the referee blows up for a foul on the Leipzig midfielder. We could see plenty of that tonight!
11 minHalstenberg falls awkwardly after leaping in the air for the ball. The Leipzig defender tried to challenge Kimmich in the air, and the Bayern man is penalised for a foul. It didn't seem like he did much wrong, though!
13 minKimmich gets the free kick this time as he tried to break through the midfield but gets brought down by Keita, who will be playing his football in the Premier League next season for Liverpool.
14 minThe set piece is poor from Bayern's point of view as it ends up bouncing off Bernardo and out for a throw-in!
14 minAt the other end, Leipzig win a corner off Vidal and it's Forsberg who takes it. The ball swings in from the right-hand side and it's headed clear by Tolisso.
16 minComan gets two opportunities to get down the byline and he delivers in two crosses in quick succession, but Upamecano heads both of them clear.
17 minRobben manages to get away from two markers on the right before delivering a deep cross, but it fails to reach Coman and the ball bobbles out for a throw-in to Leipzig.

22 minBOOKING! As a result of Leipzig's counter, Boateng charges down Keita and pays the price by picking up a yellow card. It was probably due given that he gave away a couple of fouls earlier in the half.
23 minHis discipline may be letting him down at the moment, but Boateng just delivered a lovely ball over the top for Robben, but the Dutchman was offside.
25 minSAVE! Thiago loses the ball in the middle of the pitch and Leipzig throw bodies forward. In the end it falls to Forsberg, who shoots from the edge of the area, but Ulreich makes his body big to deny a goal.
27 minBrilliant play from Robben as he delivers the ball over to the far post to find Coman, who needs to stretch to get the cross in, but the ball trickles out.
28 minSAVE! Leipzig are looking dangerous now! Keita sends a pin-pointed pass to Augustin, who turns a little before shooting, but once again Ulreich makes a crucial stop.
30 minBayern are struggling to get on the ball and in the last few minutes, the visitors have been unable to get out of their own half. Lewandowski must feel very isolated up front right now.
32 minMore frustration for Bayern as a late high foot from Tolisso on Poulsen gives Leipzig a free kick, which is hit into the box from Forsberg, but the visitors high line ensures that the ball bounces over everyone and out for a goal kick.
33 minLeipzig go on the attack again! Augustin is given plenty of space as he charges towards the edge of the box. The forward has time to unleash a shot, which he directs straight at the goalkeeper.

Vidal clumsily brings Forsberg down, but the question is, was it outside or inside the box? The referee decides that it is outside. The challenge begins before Forsberg makes it into the danger area, but Vidal ends up wrapping his legs around the forward on the line.
37 minAfter all that, Forsberg takes the free kick. He goes for goal by attempting to curl the ball into the top corner, but he ends up missing the target.
38 minAnother free kick for Leipzig as Robben brings down Keita. The Bayern winger is not happy! For some reason he makes a silly challenge again by fouling the Leipzig midfielder from behind.
40 minLeipzig work the ball around the edge of the area before Sabitzer unleashes a powerful shot at goal, but it is relatively comfortably saved by the keeper.
42 minAt the other end, Alaba and Coman link up on the left before the ball is whipped into the box looking for Lewandowski, but the ball drops just behind the striker and Leipzig clear.

8.35pmWell, what a good game, despite the scoreline being goalless! The teams head into the dressing room all square with neither side managing to break the deadlock. Heynckes will feel that he has some work to do as his players were on the backfoot numerous times during the first half.
8.39pmLeipzig have shown real danger while on the frontfoot, with Naby Keita helping orchestrate things from midfield, but the soon-to-be Liverpool player still can't help himself with regards to his disciple as he picked up his fifth yellow card of the season. Emil Forsberg has been instrumental in the home side's moves going forward, but at the moment the team have failed to get past Sven Ulreich.
8.43pmThe biggest talking point of the half came when Arturo Vidal brought down Forsberg in a dangerous area. The foul began outside the box as the Bayern midfielder tugged at his opponents shirt before tackling him on the line. In the end, the referee awarded a free kick, which was wasted by Forsberg. When the half-time whistle blew, members of the Leipzig technical area were visibly frustrated with the referee.
