Paul Heckingbottom: 'We were always on back foot'

Paul Heckingbottom poses with his League One manager of the month award for March 2016
Barnsley manager Paul Heckingbottom admits that his side made the game harder for themselves in their loss at Brighton & Hove Albion.

Barnsley manager Paul Heckingbottom has said that his side made the game harder for themselves in their 2-0 defeat at Brighton & Hove Albion on Saturday.

Glenn Murray's brace helped the high-flying Seagulls to all three points on the south coast, condemning Heckingbottom's side to back-to-back defeats following an impressive run of five wins from their opening seven games of the season.

"There was lots and lots of things wrong what made the game harder for us," Heckingbottom told reporters at a press conference on Monday. "The lads worked their socks off again which in games like that you end up doing more running than you should, which is difficult and horrible. You have to understand how to influence, communicate and organise against who you're playing against then take control of the game. We were always on the back foot.

"I know we've done well on Tuesday nights generally, at least in the time that I've been doing it. We've really enjoyed them home and away so long may that continue. We try and approach every game the same and ask the same and they have been fantastic at it. The players were as disappointed as everyone else at the weekend."

The Tykes welcome out-of-sorts Aston Villa to Oakwell on Tuesday night before travelling to Leeds United next weekend in their final game before the international break.
