Atletico Madrid manager Diego Simeone believes that victory over Real Madrid in the 2018 UEFA Super Cup will make his side stronger.

Diego Simeone has talked up the magnitude of Atletico Madrid's UEFA Super Cup victory against Real Madrid and insists that his side will become stronger as a result.

Los Rojiblancos lifted the trophy for the third time in eight years thanks to a 4-2 win at the Lillekula Stadium in Tallinn on Wednesday evening.

Atletico scored 11 minutes from the end through Diego Costa's second of the match to salvage extra time, before netting twice in the additional period to add more silverware to their collection.

Simeone was pleased to get the better of city rivals Real, who won the 2014 and 2016 Champions League finals contested between the two sides.

"Real hadn't lost an international final since 2000," he told reporters. "In the previous finals against them the little details were against us, so that's why we could not win the finals.

"We had already beat them in the [2013] Copa del Rey final and the [2014] Supercopa de Espana, and now we beat them also in Europe. This will make us stronger and we will celebrate it.

"It was an extraordinary night from Diego Costa, [he] made us stronger. After the [equaliser for] 2-2 the team believed more and more. With this great squad we have, we need everybody involved. If all our players are in good condition, our possibilities are higher."

Atleti begin their La Liga campaign with a trip to Valencia next Monday.
