Former Atletico Madrid forward Diego Forlan insists that Diego Simeone's side can challenge for La Liga this season.

Former Atletico Madrid forward Diego Forlan has insisted that Diego Simeone's side have what it takes to challenge the likes of Barcelona and Real Madrid for La Liga this season.

Atletico, who last won Spain's top flight in 2014, have made an impressive start to the 2019-20 campaign - winning each of their three matches to sit atop the division.

The capital giants sold Antoine Griezmann to Barca during the summer but a busy window saw the likes of Joao Felix, Marcos Llorente and Kieran Trippier arrive at the Wanda Metropolitano.

Forlan, who netted 96 times in 196 appearances for Atletico between 2007 and 2011, has claimed that Atletico "are in a very strong position to push for the title again".

"Following a very strong pre-season, Atletico are in a very strong position to push for the title again with young players like Joao Felix and more experienced such as Diego Costa," the London Evening Standard quotes Forlan as saying.

While Atletico have made a perfect start to the new campaign, Real Madrid and Barca have only managed two wins between them this season.
