Aston Villa make it two wins from two with a last-gasp winner against Wigan Athletic, while at the other end of the table Stoke City are stuck on one point.

Aston Villa required a 94th-minute goal to overcome Wigan Athletic this afternoon as they came out on top 3-2 to make it two wins from two in the Championship.

James Chester and Nick Powell exchanged goals in the opening 45 minutes, before Callum Connolly edged the visitors into a surprise lead at Villa Park.

A Chey Dunkley own goal just after the hour set up a thrilling conclusion, though, with Birkir Bjarnason snatching all three points for the Villans.

Villa are kept off the top of the early Championship standings by Middlesbrough, who earned a 1-0 win over Birmingham City through Britt Assombalonga's goal, although the Smoggies have played a game more than the chasing pack.

Swansea City also maintained their perfect start to the season by beating Preston North End 1-0 at the Liberty Stadium, courtesy of Jay Fulton's header shortly after the half-hour mark.

The game of the day was contested at Carrow Road, where West Bromwich Albion scored the odd goal in seven against Norwich City.

Albion were 3-1 and then 4-2 ahead, but they were made to dig deep as Grant Hanley pulled another back eight minutes from the end in a match that eventually finished 4-3.

Elsewhere, Queens Park Rangers and Reading are the only pointless sides in the division, losing 2-1 to Sheffield United and 1-0 to Nottingham Forest respectively, while Stoke City are not faring much better on one point from two games.

Beaten by Leeds United last weekend, the Potters were pegged back by Brentford after Benik Afobe had edged them in front against the run of play.

Blackburn drew 0-0 with Millwall, meanwhile, Sheffield Wednesday played out a 1-1 draw with Hull City, and Bolton Wanderers and Bristol City also contested an entertaining 2-2 stalemate in the North-West.

There was less for Paul Hurst to smile about at the New York Stadium, as his Ipswich Town side fell to a late Michael Smith goal against Rotherham United to leave him awaiting his first win.

Championship results in full: Aston Villa 3-2 Wigan, Blackburn 0-0 Millwall, Bolton 2-2 Bristol City, Middlesbrough 1-0 Birmingham, Norwich 3-4 West Brom, Forest 1-0 Reading, QPR 1-2 Sheff United, Rotherham 1-0 Ipswich, Sheff Weds 1-1 Hull, Stoke 1-1 Brentford, Swansea 1-0 Preston
