Wenger: 'Welbeck offers England a lot'

Arsene Wenger backs Arsenal attacker Danny Welbeck for a place in England's World Cup squad due to his versatility across the frontline.

Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger has talked up Danny Welbeck's versatility and suggested that the attacker can offer England a lot if he is included in their World Cup squad.

The 27-year-old has impressed for the Gunners since recovering from his latest injury layoff, netting five goals and setting up another in his last five outings.

Welbeck is expected to be a part of Gareth Southgate's travelling party for Russia 2018, having featured in the recent friendly against the Netherlands, and Wenger believes that the former Manchester United ace is starting to thrive from regular playing time.

"For Danny, it has been very good recently because he got games," he told reporters ahead of Sunday's meeting with Newcastle United. "He needed games and what is good with Danny is that he has a combination of power, pace and determination when he is really at his best physically. He looks like that is where he is now.

"Maybe he would not be there now if he had played all the games. If Danny is injury-free, he is a very good player. We spoke many times about Danny when he was regularly in the national team. He was a very good player.

"At the moment everybody is talking about [Harry] Kane and rightly so. But there is room for Welbeck [in the England lineup]. If you are national coach, what for me is very interesting is that he can play wide - on the right, on the left - and also central. He can play with anybody."

Welbeck, named on the bench for Arsenal's trip to Newcastle, has 10 goals to his name in all competitions this term.
