Arsenal chief executive Ivan Gazidis has defended Mezut Ozil after the German star quit the national team following a backlash over his photo with the president of Turkey.

Ozil released a three-page statement on social media hitting out at the perceived "racism and disrespect" of his Turkish heritage he has received in Germany from the media, ex-players, and the German FA following the controversial photograph taken with Turkish president Recep Erdogan in May.

The Gunners playmaker insisted that he had met Erdogan out of respect and revealed that he feels "unwanted" in Germany, despite contributing charitable donations and taxes in the country.

Speaking to Arsenal players and staff on their pre-season tour of Singapore, Gazidis backed up the Gunners midfielder by promoting the diversity and multiculturalism of the North London side's dressing room.

According to the Daily Mail, witnesses of Gazidis's speech were impressed by his tone and gave him a round of applause.

Arsenal kick off the new season at the Emirates on August 12 against defending champions Manchester City.
