Having made his name as a youngster at Ajax, Nwankwo Kanu subsequently joined Inter Milan, where his time at the club was affected by a serious heart defect.

Questions were understandably raised when Arsene Wenger opted to bring him to Arsenal in 1999, then, but by the time he left five years later he had earned cult hero status at Highbury.

The presence of Thierry Henry, Dennis Bergkamp and Sylvain Wiltord meant that Kanu was not always a first choice, but he developed a reputation for scoring off the bench and finished his Arsenal career with 37 goals in 119 Premier League appearances.

During that time Kanu won two FA Cups and two Premier League titles, including being part of the Invincibles side of 2003-04.
