Preview: Adelaide United vs. Newcastle Jets - prediction, team news, lineups

Sports Mole previews Friday's Australian A-League clash between Adelaide United and Newcastle Jets, including predictions, team news and possible lineups.

Adelaide United will look to record their third victory in a row when they entertain Newcastle Jets at Coopers Stadium on Friday.

Adelaide are coming off tight wins over Western Sydney Wanderers and Central Coast Mariners, and are out to continue their march up the A-League ladder.

Match preview

The Reds have moved up to fifth in the table after their gripping 3-2 result against the Wanderers.

After a rough spell of three consecutive losses, the South Australian side have turned a corner in their past two matches.

The goals of new signing Craig Goodwin have been crucial, along with the form of teenager Mohamed Toure, who at only 16 years old has been a breath of fresh air for Adelaide.

Newcastle's last fixture was a disappointing 2-0 defeat at home at the hands of Wellington Phoenix, when the lacklustre Jets never really got going in the match and rarely threatened Wellington's goal.

Coach Craig Deans will look to inspire his men as they head south for this away clash.

Newcastle have only lost one of their past six fixtures and currently sit in 10th spot on the ladder.

The Hunter outfit have relied heavily on the goals of Valentino Yuel in 2020-21, with the forward top-scoring with four, half of the club's total tally for the season.

Yuel, along with midfield pair Steven Ugarkovic and Ramy Najjarine, hold the keys to the Jets' chances of success.

Adelaide and Newcastle are yet to face off this season and last met in March 2020, when the Jets romped to a comfortable 3-0 victory.

However, historically Newcastle have a dire record against the Reds, with a solitary win from their past five encounters.

Team News

Adelaide coach Carl Veart is still without full-back Ryan Strain and defender Michael Jakobsen through injury.

Midfielder Nathan Konstandopoulos will not be back this season after suffering an ACL rupture.

Youngsters Yaya Dukuly, Toure and Pacifique Niyongabire should continue to feature for the Reds.

For Newcastle, midfielder Ben Kantarovski continues to be sidelined with a calf problem.

Fullback Jason Hoffman is also unavailable, while there are doubts Najjarine will be fully fit to face Adelaide.

Adelaide United possible starting lineup:
Delianov; Lopez, Timotheo, Elsey, Smith; Goodwin, D'Arrigo, Caletti, Halloran; Mauk, Yengi

Newcastle Jets possible starting lineup:
Duncan; Topor-Stanley, Boogaard, Koutroumbis; Millar, Thurgate, Ugarkovic, O'Toole; Yuel, Prso, O'Donovan

We say: Adelaide United 2-1 Newcastle Jets

Adelaide have found their winning edge in the past fortnight while Newcastle were flat and out of attacking ideas. On home soil the Reds should prove too strong.
