Esports in contention for inclusion in 2024 Olympic Games

Esports are given a boost as Paris 2024 chiefs intend to put it forward for inclusion in the Olympic Games.

Paris 2024 chiefs are keen to add esports to the Olympic Games programme to get younger viewers more interested in the global sporting event.

The competitive video gaming world brings in around £400m in revenue a year and attracts up to 320 million viewers, which Olympic event organisers are hoping to capitalise on.

Tony Estanguet, co-president of the 2024 Games, has revealed that the issue will be discussed with the International Olympics Committee, but a decision will not be made until 2019 when the programme is shaped.

"We have to look at it because we can't say, 'it's not about Olympics,'" Estanguet is quoted as saying by AP News. "The youth are interested, so let's meet them.

"I think it's interesting to interact with the IOC and the esports family to better understand what the process is and why it is such a success. There is some time to look at it, to interact, to engage. I don't want to say 'no' from the beginning."

Esports were recently included in the 2022 Asian Games schedule as a medal event.
