The UK version of Married At First Sight will return for a sixth series in 2021 with a switch to the Australian format.

Channel 4 has announced that the UK version of Married At First Sight will return in 2021 with a new format resembling the Australian version of the show.

The unique dating programme sees singletons meet for the first time as they walk down the aisle to get married - and then get to know each other before deciding whether to stay together.

The show has aired in the UK for five series on Channel 4, with typically four to six episodes per series, but when the show returns for its sixth series in 2021 it will move to E4 and run for 20 episodes.

The change brings the show in line with the Aussie version, which is stripped over many weeks and was a ratings hit for E4 earlier in the year, regularly drawing in 1 million viewers to the channel every night.

Lee McMurray, C4's commissioning editor of factent, said: "I'm thrilled to be refreshing one of the portfolio's most popular brands for E4, bringing extra scale and ambition to what is already one of the most audacious and provocative experiments on television, and delivering what we hope will be the most exciting series yet."

Applications are now open for the new series, which is scheduled to be filmed in Spring for broadcast later in 2021.
