Captain Tom Moore's fundraising walk for the NHS passes an incredible £2.5 million after more than 120,000 people donate.

Captain Tom Moore's fundraiser for the NHS smashed through the £2.5 million barrier this evening.

The 99-year-old, a World War II veteran, vowed to walk 100 laps of his back garden before reaching his milestone 100th birthday later this month in an attempt to raise money for frontline workers battling the coronavirus outbreak.

The appeal had an initial modest target of just £1,000 but after gaining media attention, including from ITV's Good Morning Britain, the total swiftly rose and passed the £1 million mark at 9am this morning.

The figure has continued to rise throughout the day, however, and at 6pm tonight reached an incredible £2.5 million after more than 120,000 people made donations - an increase of £2 million in just 24 hours.

Earlier today GMB host Piers Morgan told Moore: "Tom, you are an absolute legend and we are so proud of you for serving your country in World War II and for serving your country again now for what you're doing with your walks."
