Bruce Jones, Vicky Entwistle and Jane Danson have all paid tribute to their former Coronation Street co-star Johnny Briggs following his death at the age of 85.

The actor played Mike Baldwin on the soap for three decades and in the character's final years had numerous run-ins with the notorious Battersby clan.

Danson, who is still on the cobbles playing eldest daughter Leanne, wrote on Twitter: "So sorry to hear johnny Briggs has passed away. We did lots of sc's together. I remember he took the battersby's out for lunch on our first week filming - happy memories."

Jones - aka patriarch Les Battersby - told The Sun: "I'm so sorry to hear my good friend Johnny Briggs has passed away today. All my thoughts go out to his family.

"I will always remember the good times we had working together, and the times we spent together in our free time away from the show.

"A brilliant actor and a wonderful friend. God bless you Johnny."

Meanwhile, Entwistle, who played Les's wife Janice, wrote: "So very saddened today, to hear that the fabulous Mr J Briggs has passed away.

"I adored you Johnny, you taught me so much. Thank you for all the naughty giggles & the genuine affection we shared. My thoughts are with your family at this difficult time. All my love Vic."

According to a family statement, Briggs passed away peacefully at home following "a long illness".
