British diver Matthew Dixon praised after injury changes routine

Young British diver Matthew Dixon is praised for his fourth-placed finish in the diving platform after a bad dive left him needing to change his routine at the last minute.

British diver Matthew Dixon has been commended for his bravery after finishing just outside the medals only a day after a practice dive went wrong and left him needing medical treatment.

Dixon, 15, finished fourth in the platform competition even though he had been forced to alter his diving routine after the injury on Thursday.

Britain's diving team leader Julian Bellan said Dixon ended up "black and blue" after a complex dive went wrong.

"He's a brave kid who's had a rough ride," said Bellan. "Little Matthew's had a tough time. He completely wiped out flat on one of his dives, and was completely horizontal when he hit the water.

"The medics were with him afterwards, got him out the pool and he was black and blue.

"After the injury, we had to change the lot of dives that he was doing. We had to reintroduce the twisting arm stand, a dive which he hasn't done for six months. He had to relearn it yesterday afternoon. So then to finish fourth against that standard of opposition at just 15 was an absolutely phenomenal achievement.

Dixon's British teammate Matthew Lee took the gold in yesterday's final diving event.
