World number one Michael van Gerwen suffers a surprise 7-4 defeat to James Wade on the opening night of the 2016 Premier League.

James Wade has started the 2016 Premier League campaign with a 7-4 victory over Michael van Gerwen in Leeds.

The 2009 champion dropped the opening three legs but after hitting back to establish a 5-3 lead, he ended the contest with successive 12-dart legs.

Raymond van Barneveld also began the tournament in positive fashion after averaging 103.6 on his way to a 7-2 win against Phil Taylor.

Dave Chisnall tops the standings after week one, however, after recording a 7-0 whitewash over Robert Thornton.

It was a night to forget for debutant Michael Smith after he suffered two heavy defeats to Peter Wright and Adrian Lewis respectively.

Smith played twice after Gary Anderson was ruled out through illness, but he could not take advantage as he succumbed 7-2 to Wright and 7-1 to Lewis.
