World number one Michael van Gerwen beats Peter Wright to retain his UK Open title.

Michael van Gerwen has recorded an 11-4 victory over Peter Wright to successfully retain his UK Open title.

In a repeat of last year's final, the world number one was quick out of the blocks to open up a 4-1 advantage, before that became 7-3 at the second break.

Van Gerwen, who beat Phil Taylor in the semi-finals, cruised into a 10-4 lead, but in a dramatic 15th leg, Wright missed double 12 for a nine-darter as he looked to make an unlikely comeback.

However, he missed further darts at a double and Van Gerwen returned to take out 64 to claim yet another PDC Major crown.

The small consolation for Wright is that he has returned to number five in the world rankings, with Van Gerwen extending his lead in first place.
