Adrian Lewis focused on World Matchplay opener

Adrian Lewis says that he is only focused on his match against James Wilson at the World Matchplay, despite the prospect of facing Michael van Gerwen in round two.

Adrian Lewis has suggested that he is only focused on his opening-round match with James Wilson at the World Matchplay.

Lewis has enjoyed a strong 2018 on the ProTour and it has enabled the former finalist to qualify for Blackpool as the 16th seed, throwing open the possibility of a last-16 showdown with Michael van Gerwen.

However, Lewis has insisted that he is not looking too far ahead as the Stoke-on-Trent thrower looks for a return to form on the big stage.

The 33-year-old told Live Darts: "James is a great player, you can't underestimate him. Everyone's already talking about me and MVG meeting in the last 16 but I can't look any further than the first round.

"If you take your eye off the ball in that round, you could be out. If you look around the room for a mug, you're the mug. I've made the semi-finals on the last two occasions there so hopefully I can go two better and win it."

Lewis heads into the tournament having won just two of his last seven matches at PDC Major tournaments.
