Chris Froome, Geraint Thomas and Adam Yates all miss out on a medal at Greg van Avermaet storms to Olympic road race gold in Rio.

Great Britain missed out on a medal in the Olympic road race this afternoon as Belgium's Greg van Avermaet stormed to gold in Rio.

Van Avermaet launched a late assault on leader Rafal Majka to overtake the Pole on the home straight, while Jakob Fuglsang could not keep up on the sprint finish and was forced to settle for silver.

Majka had looked like cruising to gold when his fellow two members of the leading pack, Vincenzo Nibali and Sergio Henao, crashed out on the final descent to leave him on his own.

However, he was unable to hold off the challenge of the chasing pair and in the end crossed the line in third place to claim bronze.

Thomas had been in with a chance of a medal until the closing stages of the race, but he also fell victim to the treacherous descent before getting back up to cross the line in 11th.

Three-time Tour de France winner Froome was one place further back having never really threatened a medal, while Adam Yates came home in 15th.
