New Zealand have taken control on the first day of the first Test against South Africa thanks to a display of inspired bowling at Kingsmead.

The Proteas, having opted to bat, went from 102-2 to 160-5 and were finally holding on at 236-8 at stumps on Friday.

Trent Boult (2-42) and Neil Wagner (3-47) did the bulk of the damage as many of the home side's batsmen failed to capitalise on decent starts.

Stand-in skipper Faf du Plessis and Temba Bavumba had dug in during the middle part of the day to take their side to 146-4, but when the captain's resistance was ended four overs after the resumption, the Black Caps were able to put their opponents to the sword.
