Virat Kohli century gives India momentum over England

Captain Virat Kohli hits a knock of 149 to leave India just 22 runs short of England, who lose Alastair Cook with the final ball of day two of the first Test.

India have ended day two of the first Test with England trailing by 22 runs, but the tourists hold a slender advantage in the contest at Edgbaston.

England were quickly bowled out for 287 at the start of Thursday's play, and India made a quick start by reaching 50 without loss until Sam Curran picked up three quick wickets before lunch.

However, Virat Kohli was dropped early on in his innings and the India captain proceeded to make a sublime 149 from just 225 balls to keep the pressure on England.

None of Kohli's teammates posted more than 26 but the batsman's heroics took India to 274, with Curran the pick of England's bowlers with figures of 4-74.

England had hoped to come through the remaining four overs of the day unscathed, but the home side were dealt a major blow with Ravichandran Ashwin bowling Alastair Cook - just like he did in the first innings - for a duck in the final over.

Joe Root will join Keaton Jennings (5*) at the crease on Friday with England sitting on 9-1 and in need of a strong opening session in order to regain the initiative from their opponents.
