Hampshire have confirmed that they have approached Shane Watson about playing for the county next season.

The Australia all-rounder announced his retirement from Test cricket on Sunday after withdrawing from his side's tour of England with a calf injury.

Hampshire director of cricket Giles White has stated that if 34-year-old Watson were to return to the Ageas Bowl, it would only be in one-day games.

"He has often said he would like to return if the opportunity comes up," White told BBC Radio Solent.

"It will depend on his availability more than anything, but initial contact has been made. I'm not sure how long things will take, but certainly there's a will there.

"It's likely to depend on the structure of the competitions and the international fixtures next season, but we'll see how it goes,"

The 34-year-old previously played for Hampshire between 2004 and 2006.

Former England batsman Kevin Pietersen stands in the field for Surrey on August 19, 2012.
