Kenya's David Rudisha wins a second successive Olympic gold medal in the men's 800m.

Kenya's David Rudisha has successfully defended his Olympic title in the men's 800m.

The 27-year-old was unable to break the world record he set in London four years ago, but still pulled out a season-best performance of 1:42.15 to top the podium in Rio.

Taoufik Makhloufi of Algeria was hot on Rudisha's heels, clocking a time of 1:42.61 for the silver medal. The final spot on the podium went to Team USA's Clayton Murphy, who notched up a new personal best of 1:42.93 to edge out Frenchman Pierre-Ambroise Bosse.

Rudisha's teammates Ferguson Rotich and Alfred Kipketer came fifth and seventh respectively with times of 1:43.55 and 1:46.02.

Poland's Marcin Lewandowski finished sixth with a season-best time of 1:44.20, while Boris Berian of the USA was last on 1:46.15.
