Former rugby league player Jarryd Hayne is released by the San Francisco 49ers after playing six games for the club this season.

The San Francisco 49ers have confirmed that they have cut former rugby league star Jarryd Hayne from their roster.

The 27-year-old made the decision to quit Rugby League last year, despite a successful career in the sport with Australia and New South Wales in the NRL, to attempt to play in the NFL.

Hayne signed for the 49ers as an undrafted free agent and made their 53-man roster out of training camp.

He played as a running back and punt returner in six of his side's first seven games, but was made inactive for their last match, leading to the decision to cut him from the roster in favour of Kendall Gaskins.

Hayne ran for 25 yards on eight carries and also returned eight punts for 76 yards for the 49ers this season.
